About

MN Writes MN Reads is a suite of resources that support local authors with online creation and publishing tools and allow readers to access locally-produced content. We believe that libraries have a vibrant role to play in helping communities come together to create and share books. These resources, Pressbooks, Indie Author Project, and Biblioboard Library, are free to Minnesota residents.

Create: Pressbooks enables writers to convert their manuscripts into a variety of ebook and print formats. Pressbooks helps writers format their books with professional design templates and includes tools to assist with book organization. After converting their book into different formats, authors can distribute their book however they choose.

Share: A free option for sharing ebooks is the Indie Author Project. Titles submitted to the Indie Author Project portal undergo a basic screening process, before being added to the statewide Indie Minnesota collection. Additionally, if your book is selected by Indie Author Project curation partners, it will also be available alongside other great indie reads in participating libraries across the U.S. and Canada. Authors retain all rights to books submitted to the Indie Author Project.

Read: BiblioBoard Library is the place where readers find content.  The platform provides access to local authors in the Indie Minnesota collection and select authors from across the country in the Indie Author Project Select collection. This easy-to-use tool features work from a wide variety of genres, including comics, history, art, graphic novels, young adult novels, and romance. There are an unlimited number of checkouts and no return periods, meaning that readers never have to wait for a book to be available. In addition, no library card is needed to access these titles..

Self-publishing is not one size fits all. Individuals are welcome to use the MN Writes MN Reads resources together as a cohesive process or to select individual tools that work for them.
